O'Neil tried out for Season 3 of Canadian Idol in the early months of 2005 while still in high school. The judges were impressed with her singing and she advanced into the Top 100 Round. O'Neil was praised highly from panel of judges. However, she suffered massive losses during the Top 10 week and Top 9 week of the finals. She ended up on the third row, followed by the in the bottom two. Judges were amazed by her performance, and recommended viewers to select those who sing well, such as Melissa. O'Neil's performances were so good that she never placed in the third place in the future. She was the judge. Werner was confident, following another two incredible performances, that O'Neil would win of the Canadian Idol competition, as well as the first woman and youngest ever to win the show, following the September 7 finals in 2005. O'Neil got a call from Canadian the Prime Minister Paul Martin congratulating her on being the winner of Canadian Idol right away.
